Hospitality 2020 Task 3

Health and safety
Task 3
Before starting your practical you need to ensure that you have no nail polish on or that your nails have no dirt under them and that they are at a presentable length. Make sure that you are wearing no loose jewellery that could fall into your cooking. You also have to tie your hair up and/or wear a hair net so that no hair strands fall into the food while cooking. Always put on a clean apron, and wash your hands and nails thoroughly under hot, soapy water. Before even putting anything on your table, wipe down the table with a clean cloth and antibacterial spray. Doing all of these things are whats making our food safe and healthy.

Every time that you touch something with a bad bacteria on it you are supposed to wash your hands. Washing your hands in hot, soapy water ensures that your hands will be rid of most of their bacteria. Touching your face transfers unwanted oils from your face to your hands. By handling raw food and not washing your hands afterwards you are putting yourself and others at risk of getting sick because of it. This is not safe because raw foods have harmful bacteria and can make you very sick. If you are handling money in between touching different foods you are getting everyone else's bacteria on your hands. They could easily transfer bad bacteria to you. When around food you have to be sure to blow your nose and sneeze correctly. Sneezing should be done into your elbow or a tissue. Blowing your nose should be into a tissue. After doing both of these things you need to be washing yours hands. If you are sick and are serving food to other people, you will most likely be giving them your bad bacteria that made you sick.

If you happen to have a cut, wound or a skin condition of any kind be sure to cover it with a plaster. Also you should wear a rubber glove on the hand of your injury to prevent the plaster falling off. Having any of these could contaminate your food but also the food could get into your wound and give you an infection.

While cooking you must avoid scratching, touching hair, touching your nose or mouth and spitting. These actions all could easily transfer unwanted bacteria onto your food and contaminate it. Your mouth/face is one of the dirtiest places on the human body and has lots of different bacteria in it. Try to avoid touching these places at all times to stop the contamination of your food.

Being hygienic is the most important thing you can do in a kitchen. Always be sure to use clean utensils when tasting food to avoid cross contamination between raw and cooked foods. Clean the utensil after using it to sample food so that you don't use it for anything else. You should also use clean tongs when handling different foods. You can't just go and use a pair of tongs to pick up chicken and then use the same pair of tongs to put vegetables into a pan. Use different utensils for different foods to prevent cross contamination across your foods. We don't touch food with our hands to reduce the risk of our bad bacteria getting onto the food.

We gave our meal to the Biology teacher Mr Kane. Here is his feedback...
Gidday Emily

Feedback ..... Apart from me not liking tomatoes, the dish was fantastic, looked great, smelled wonderful, tasted devine. Was a wonderful little pick me up as I was having a not so good day = 2 lovely young ladies delivering a delicious plate of food and collecting the empty plate afterwards, my day suddenly got much better.

Thank you very much.

Here are some examples of how you should look in a kitchen while cooking...
